Tribute to Dr. Nancy H. McKee

The Division of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery at the University of Toronto hosted the Dr. Nancy H. McKee Lecture on December 1, 2025, a keynote event created to honour Dr. McKee’s distinguished career as a clinician, surgeon-scientist, educator, mentor, and advocate. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. James R. Bain, who collaborated with Dr. McKee on research projects during his time in the Surgeon-Scientist Training Program as a resident in the division, making his participation a meaningful tribute to her legacy. Serving as the Opening Address for the inaugural Operative Plastic Surgery Anatomy (OPSA) Course, the lecture celebrated Dr. McKee’s enduring impact and set an inspiring tone for the division’s newest educational initiative.

The OPSA Course—held from Dec 1-2, 2025—introduced a progressive, hands-on framework designed to give University of Toronto plastic surgery residents the opportunity to perform essential procedures from start to finish, including those not routinely encountered during standard clinical rotations. Spanning two years and comprising eight unique two-day sessions, the program emphasizes senior resident primary operating, with PGY2–3 residents assisting and PGY4–5 residents acting as primary surgeons under faculty supervision. Replacing and enhancing both the Cadaver Skills sessions and the Duke Flap Course, OPSA requires residents to arrive fully prepared to operate and involves roughly 32 faculty members per cycle. Continuous refinement informed by resident and faculty feedback, along with an annual “Best Facilitator” award, reflects the division’s commitment to educational excellence—an ethos deeply aligned with Dr. McKee’s profound influence on surgical training and mentorship.
