Dr Semple studied at the Ontario College of Art. He then completed a BSc in Medical Illustrating (Art as Applied To Medicine), in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Semple received his MD degree at McMaster University and his surgical training at the University of Toronto. He received a Medical Research Council of Canada research fellowship during his surgical training and completed an MSc degree in Experimental Pathology (Surgical Scientist Program). Upon completion of his surgical training he was Clinical Fellow in Microsurgery at the Toronto General Hospital.

Dr Semple is an internationally recognized clinician, and scientist. He is respected clinician with major leadership roles in numerous societies and organizations. Dr Semple’s surgical practice at Women’s College Hospital focuses on breast surgery and breast reconstruction. He has a long-standing track record of excellence in innovation and creative thinking.

Current appointments held:
• Faculty surgeon in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Women’s College Hospital.
• Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
• Chair in Surgical Research of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Ontario Chapter). This is the first surgical research Chair awarded in Canada by the CBCF.
• Senior Scientist in the Women’s College Research Institute
• Member of the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) at the University of Toronto.
• Vice Chair, Board of Governors, Ontario College of Art and Design University, Toronto Ontario

Past appointments held:
• Past President, Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (1981)
• Director and Co Founder of the Advanced Regenerative Tissue Engineering Centre (ARTEC) at Sunnybrook and the University of Toronto. (2000- 2005)

Dr Semple has published widely including articles in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and abstracts. He has made numerous presentations at scientific meetings in Canada, the United States Asia and Europe. Currently, his clinical research focuses on breast surgery, breast reconstruction and lymphedema. His research interests are varied and include developing appropriate and affordable mobile and smart phone technology for health care and high altitude meteorology and the impact of global warming in the Himalaya.
